USC CAREER 
  • He started 60 career matches at USC, while playing mainly at outside hitter but also at opposite hitter and libero 
     

  • He helped USC to a pair of NCAA Final Four appearances (second place in 2009 and third place in 2011 when he made the NCAA All-Tournament Team) 
     

  • As a 2011 senior, he was an All-American third teamer (hitting .326 with 245 kills) as USC won its first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championship since 2000 and was ranked No. 1 nationally until the final poll 
     

  • As a 2009 sophomore, he helped USC win its first MPSF Tournament ever and advance to the NCAAs for the first time since 1991 

 

USA CAREER 
  • After USC, he played indoor volleyball professionally in Puerto Rico and Turkey 
     

  • He switched to the beach in 2012 and has earned $416,500 in career prize money with seven first-place finishes (including twice on the FIVB Tour and four times on the AVP Tour), playing first mainly with John Hyden and since 2018 with Trevor Crabb 
     

  • He was the 2013 AVP Newcomer of the Year and the 2014 FIVB Rookie of the Year, and in 2015 he and Hyden were the AVP Team of the Year 
     

  • Bourne was sidelined during the 2017 beach season and much of 2018 with an autoimmune disease (an inflammatory muscle disease that took over his body) 
     

  • He and partner Trevor Crabb just missed qualifying for the 2021 Olympics (finishing third for the two available USA spots), but when Taylor Crabb (Trevor’s brother who qualified for the 2021 Games with Jake Gibb as the second USA team) tested positive for COVID and had to withdraw on July 21, Bourne was chosen by USA Volleyball to become Gibb’s partner;  they will be playing together for the first time ever 
     

  • When Bourne finished playing with Hyden in 2016, Hyden was one of the beach’s oldest players at 43 years old;  Gibb is 45 years old 
     

  • Bourne grew up with the Crabb brothers and they learned how to play volleyball at Honolulu’s Outrigger Canoe Club 

 

PERSONAL 
  • He is known for his freakish athleticism 
     

  • His parents, Peter and Katy, were accomplished triathletes, while his brother Peter played football at Hawaii, his sister Kai played water polo at Cal State East Bay and his sister Britta played soccer at Hawaii 
     

  • He co-hosts a popular beach volleyball podcast, SANDCAST 
     

  • He attended Academy of the Pacific in Honolulu, HI., but played for Maryknoll High because AOP did not have a volleyball team (he helped Maryknoll win the 2006 Division II state volleyball title as a senior when he made All-State first team) 
     

  • He was also played basketball in high school, where he was the 2007 Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division II Co-Player of the Year  
     

  • He was involved in canoe racing with the Outrigger Canoe Club 
     

  • Some of his artwork was displayed at the 2010 'Artletics' on-campus exhibit that featured the works of USC student-athletes 
     

  • He and his wife, actress Gabrielle Bourne, have a child, Naia
